Rachel Maclean
Who???
Rachel Maclean is a multi-media artist based in Glasgow, Scotland.
Maclean has been inspiring my work for a while now and is one of my favourite artists. Her influence is very obvious through the cute/femininity that characterises most of my art.
What???
Maclean uses a multiple of different techniques such as film/sculpture/print-making and photography to create narrations about politics, society and identity.
Her style is feminine and whimsical, using fantasy settings and characters to comment on how society works.
Her work is often a mix of cute and sinister, with grotesque images used to get her point across.
What have I learnt???
* Even if work is ‘cute’ or ‘feminine’ it can be taken seriously.
* Maclean’s work has taught me to cater to my own taste before catering to other people’s, which I have found extremely liberating, and made me more connected and interested in my work.
* Work with a ''Cute' can be serious, sinister and even scary
* Appropriation- Maclean appropriates different voices in her work as different characters which is an interesting technique.
