Yoshitomo Nara
I find Nara's work refreshing in the sense that it is not overly complicated or detailed, but still gets his point across.
His distinct style is one of my favourite things about his collection of work, as it gives his pieces a fun and playful feel, despite some of them having quite violent undertones or meanings.
I am also inspired by his use of simple phrases in illustrations.
He has influenced my 'intervention' by not only giving me a reference to base it on, but also encouraging me to be playful and slightly silly.
[about Yoshitomo Nara]
Nara is a Japanese artist who is most well-known for his illustraitons, paintings and sculptures of child-like characters or animals.
The characters are usually menacing and are sometimes depicted doing violent things or holding weapons.
He' takes inspiration from his childhood, literature, studying in Germany and music.
He is part of the superflat movement, started by Murakami, another Japanese artist. It is a reflection of Japan's hyper-consumerist society, and younger people's mistrust of it.
