guerrilla girls
WHAT DOES GUERRILLA MEAN???
; a member of a small independent group fighting against larger forces
;referring to actions performed in an impromptu way
The guerrilla girls are a feminist group of anonymous women (kept anonymous by gorilla masks) who shed light on problems to do with women or people of colour and their place in art, politics, film and pop culture.
Their anonymity not only keeps the focus on the issues they speak bout, it allows them to introduce humour to appeal to more audiences.
Founded in 1985, sparked by a protest against the MoMA for only having 17 women artists, and less people of colour artist work shown in their exhibition.
"if art galleries are only showing white males, its the history of patriarchy"
"we're happy to know we have posters in college dorm rooms instead of hanging over the couch of some billionaire art collector"
"we love to criticise an institution right on their own walls"
"artists are at the forefront of the resistance"
THEIR INFLUENCE ON ME ;
* masks - influence of femininity in my work, standing up to patriarchy and the 'male gaze'
* use of humour yet still putting a point across
* standing up for what you believe in via art
what is the male gaze???
